Since yesterday, the longest cave in Hungary is the Szépvölgyi System (29km), after connecting Harcsaszájú-Hideglyuk System (9km) to Pálvölgyi-Mátyáshegyi cave (20km). The connection involved serious digging efforts. The system has 10 entrances, and can be found under the capital of Hungary, Budapest. The caves are formed mainly in eocene limestone, and all of the entrances have been discovered during quarrying limestone for the buildings of Budapest, the first one at 1902. The cave formed about 2 million years ago, with thermal waters uprising and dissoulating the tectonically preformed rock. Because of this, the plan of the cave is a big maze, a labyrinth, where it difficult to find the way without map. Because of climatic conditions on the surface, the temperature of the cave is around 11 degrees celsius.
